Apartment lockouts are common, and they are usually easy to resolve. Take a breath and work through these steps.
Relax and check your options
Do you have a roommate, partner or friend with a spare key? Is a balcony or patio door unlocked and safely reachable at ground level? Don't climb to upper floors or force windows.
Call your landlord or property manager
Many buildings have an on-site manager or maintenance contact with a master or spare key. Some charge a lockout fee, and some can't respond out of hours, but it is worth calling first.
Calling a locksmith
If the landlord can't help, a locksmith can usually open an apartment door without damage. Expect to show ID with your address or a copy of your lease. That check protects you and your neighbours.
Changing or rekeying the lock afterwards
If your keys were lost or stolen, you may want the lock rekeyed. Most leases require the landlord's permission first, and the landlord will usually need a copy of the new key. Ask them before booking — see our guide to rekeying.
Avoid the next lockout
- Leave a spare with a trusted friend nearby rather than under the mat.
- Ask your landlord about a keypad lock.
- Keep the property manager's number and a locksmith's number saved in your phone.
